Signs of Skin Cancer

If you noticed an unusual bump on your foot, would you be able to say with certainty what it was? Don’t guess! Leave it to your experienced podiatrists. Dr. Bumpus and Dr. Malin at Knoxville Footcare in Knoxville, TN, provide expert podiatric treatment to people suffering from lesions and other topical problems on their feet. During the summer, people are more likely to notice discoloration, which is why we wanted to take some time to address the warning signs of skin cancer.

Exposure to sunlight increases the risk of developing three common types of skin cancer: basal cell, squamous cell, and melanoma. Basal cell carcinomas look like corns, discolored patches, or ulcers. They may bleed, but are usually contained and are the least deadly type of skin cancer. Squamous cell carcinomas look very similar to warts and might crust over or become inflamed. They are often able to spread and may be painful or itchy. Melanoma is the deadliest kind of common skin cancer, and it can appear in a variety of ways. It may be the cause of an irregularly-shaped patch of discolored skin, especially if the patch is growing and has ragged edges.

Melanoma has a genetic factor in its development and it may appear in places such as the soles of the feet that don’t get as much sunlight. Nevertheless, sunscreen is one of the best defenses against the development of skin cancer. Cases are usually much easier to treat when they’re caught early, so if patients are going barefoot during the summer months, they are advised to take an opportunity to examine their feet all over. Schedule an appointment with your Knoxville podiatrist if you notice anything unusual!
